Announcing Virtual Epilepsy Education Series

The Epilepsy Foundation Metro DC and Epilepsy Foundation Maryland are partnering together to offer an educational series for people living with epilepsy, caregivers and family members. Five (5) webinar style events will be planned from July through November 2020. These virtual events allow participants to join from anywhere to learn and connect with others impacted by epilepsy.

Transitioning to College: What Every Student with Epilepsy and Their Parents Need to Know

The transition to college is a major milestone for teens and families. The college journey allows a teen to gain new social independence, learning opportunities and personal responsibilities. For some parents, adjusting to this time of separation and transition can be difficult. For a teen living with epilepsy, heading off to college may bring new concerns. This presentation will focus on ways to prepare and transition medical needs; how to utilize campus services like health and disability; and learn real advice from a student and parent who have been there.

Preparing for School: Tips for a Successful Start to the New School Year

As the new school year approaches, it is good for all families to plan ahead for a successful transition from summertime. Epilepsy can bring additional considerations and challenges for students and their families. This presentation will focus on ways to help prepare your child for the new year; important things to discuss with school staff like seizure action plans and first aid; and knowing your child’s rights for any needed accommodations or services.

Seizure Alert Dogs and Devices: What You Need to Know

Have you wondered if a seizure alert dog would work for you and your family? You’ve seen the new seizure alert devices, but don’t know which one would be the best fit for you. This presentation will provide the facts into seizure dogs and the process for getting a dog; an overview of the various seizure alert devices available and how to determine which one is right for you; and first-hand experiences from seizure dog owners and device users.

Driving, Transportation and Epilepsy

Every state regulates driver’s license eligibility of persons with certain medical conditions. The most common requirement for people with epilepsy is that they be seizure free for a specific period of time and submit a physician’s evaluation of their ability to drive safely. In this presentation, we will provide an overview of the driving laws and restrictions for Maryland and the District of Columbia. In addition, we will provide a comprehensive overview of transportation options for non-drivers.

Innovations in Epilepsy Treatment and Care

“No seizures, no side effects” is the goal in epilepsy care. Not everyone has reached that goal, but research and new treatment options are available to help more people achieve this. This presentation will provide an overview of the newest treatment options including medication, surgery, devices and diet; and a review of the current research being conducted and how patients can get involved in research.
